{"id":2680,"date":"2020-06-07T13:36:28","date_gmt":"2020-06-07T20:36:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.robinstewart.com\/blog\/?p=2680"},"modified":"2020-06-07T13:36:28","modified_gmt":"2020-06-07T20:36:28","slug":"divisive-algorithms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.robinstewart.com\/blog\/2020\/06\/divisive-algorithms\/","title":{"rendered":"Divisive algorithms"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>From the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/facebook-knows-it-encourages-division-top-executives-nixed-solutions-11590507499\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> (via <a href=\"https:\/\/daringfireball.net\/linked\/2020\/05\/27\/wsj-facebook-divisiveness\">John Gruber<\/a>), &#8220;Facebook Executives Shut Down Efforts to Make the Site Less Divisive&#8221;:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>A 2016 presentation that names as author a Facebook researcher and sociologist, Monica Lee, found [that] \u201c64% of all extremist group joins are due to our recommendation tools\u201d and that most of the activity came from the platform\u2019s \u201cGroups You Should Join\u201d and \u201cDiscover\u201d algorithms.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Gruber <a href=\"https:\/\/daringfireball.net\/linked\/2020\/05\/27\/wsj-facebook-divisiveness\">noted<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>In the old days, on, say, Usenet, there were plenty of groups for extremists. There were private email lists for extremists. But there was no recommendation algorithm promoting those groups.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This crystalized in my mind the extent to which recommendation algorithms are central to both the successes and failures of social media. &#8220;Success&#8221; in terms of reach: the algorithms pick the most addictive posts to keep people hooked on the site, leading to massive engagement; &#8220;failure&#8221; in terms of the human cost: the most addictive posts are not only addictive but also often divisive, distressing, and untrue.
