{"id":610,"date":"2010-12-05T16:39:47","date_gmt":"2010-12-06T00:39:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.robinstewart.com\/blog\/?p=610"},"modified":"2010-12-05T16:39:47","modified_gmt":"2010-12-06T00:39:47","slug":"collective-intelligence-depends-on-social-skills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.robinstewart.com\/blog\/2010\/12\/collective-intelligence-depends-on-social-skills\/","title":{"rendered":"Collective intelligence depends on social skills"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers from MIT and elsewhere recently <a href=\"http:\/\/web.mit.edu\/press\/2010\/collective-intel.html\">published a study<\/a> where groups of two to five people had to solve various problems such as &#8220;visual puzzles&#8230; negotiations, brainstorming, games and complex rule-based design assignments.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>They found that &#8220;the average and maximum intelligence of individual group members did not significantly predict the performance of their groups overall.&#8221; However:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Groups whose members had higher levels of &#8220;social sensitivity&#8221; were more collectively intelligent [i.e. those groups had better scores on the problems they solved together]. \u201cSocial sensitivity has to do with how well group members perceive each other&#8217;s emotions,\u201d says Christopher Chabris, a co-author.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The study was billed as a way for managers to form better teams. But the more important point to me is: social intelligence is critical in business.
