{"id":664,"date":"2011-01-19T15:09:12","date_gmt":"2011-01-19T23:09:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.robinstewart.com\/blog\/?p=664"},"modified":"2011-01-19T15:09:12","modified_gmt":"2011-01-19T23:09:12","slug":"apps-are-the-next-medium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.robinstewart.com\/blog\/2011\/01\/apps-are-the-next-medium\/","title":{"rendered":"Apps are the next medium"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In recent months, App Store &#8220;apps&#8221; have continued to explode in popularity. iOS apps are currently being downloaded at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.asymco.com\/2011\/01\/16\/more-than-60-apps-have-been-downloaded-for-every-ios-device-sold\/\">twice the rate<\/a> of digital music tracks from the iTunes store, with the average iOS user downloading\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.asymco.com\/2011\/01\/18\/ios-users-download-about-5-apps-every-month\/\">five new apps per month<\/a>. App developers have received\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.asymco.com\/2011\/01\/17\/itunes-has-paid-over-2-billion-to-app-developers-and-12-billion-to-record-labels\/\">$2 billion<\/a> in revenue over the first 31 months (and that does not include ad revenue).<\/p>\n<p>Horace Dediu recently made the important\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.asymco.com\/2011\/01\/16\/more-than-60-apps-have-been-downloaded-for-every-ios-device-sold\/\">point<\/a> that not only are apps here to stay, they are the next important\u00a0<em>medium<\/em>. Apple designed iOS such that apps take over the whole device, each one &#8220;magically&#8221; transforming it into an object with a whole new set of capabilities. The device becomes a map or a compass or a video camera or a textbook or a game or a credit card or a newspaper or a radio or any new combination thereof. This new medium can be used for both art and productivity; charity and industry; form and function. It is not a fad. It is rather the logical next step for human-facing software.<\/p>\n<p>Like music and movies, apps can be bought and sold as if they&#8217;re objects.\u00a0The iTunes store\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/arstechnica.com\/apple\/news\/2008\/04\/apple-passes-wal-mart-now-1-music-retailer-in-us.ars\">already<\/a> sells more music than any other physical or online retailer.
