Below is another bank of controls, the most complicated array in the substation. You can see the scale of the picture based on the chair in the lower right.

At right is a close-up of two interesting-looking panels.

 

 

So how are all these controls connected to the main electricity the substation handles? Well, they're connected by a LOT of wires. These wires don't carry the actual electricity that the substation distributes; they carry signals and indicators to control the various parts of the building's operations. Below you can see some of these wires, running through racks mounted on the ceiling:

When everything's working properly, the signals from the controllers get routed to other controllers and ultimately outside to the transformers, which in turn step down the power coming from the power plant and send it off to your neighborhood. At home, you flip a light switch and the lights come on!
