Today, the local substation is having problems with one of the big transformers. Fortunately, there are three transformers for every circuit (if you look carefully, you can see the three sets of wires atop the transformers at right) so that they can deal with problems without turning the power off! (Turning the power off would result in blackouts.) At right you can see that they've opened the case containing the faulty transformer. The transformer itself was taken out of the side of the case.

The circuitry inside the case is used for controlling which transformers are in use, and other details of their operation.
