On both sides of the building are banks of controls. Many of them look alike but if you look carefully there are also some differences between panels.
The panels are used for monitoring and controlling the electricity going out to each section of the neighborhood the substation serves.
Below is a close up of a shutoff switch (can you find the same switch in the picture at right?).
To monitor the electricity flow, you generally need amp meters, volt meters, and watt meters. Examples of these are shown at right and below.
Electricity usage is measured with rotating charts like the one at right. The chart is a week long; every week it gets replaced by a substation worker. If you look closely, you can see the slight differences in energy use during the day and during the night.
